Products

The current collection features pillows, hats, scarves, mittens, bags, earmuffs, and holiday stockings made by hand from the finest velvets and fleeces. Our velvets are a rayon/polyester blend and iridescent, which means that the fabric is woven from two contrasting thread colors. When embossed, the nuances of color are apparent in bright highlights and colorfull shadows. These are beautifully accentuated in the drapes and folds of the scarves in particular.

Scarves:
Underground Velvet creates three varieties of scarf. One is 100% velvet in which the embossed iridescent front of the velvet is backed with black crushed velvet. This measures 7" x 56". For the other two the embossed velvet front is backed with black polar fleece. One measures 7" x 56" while the new slim scarf launched for 2004 measures 5" x 56". The velvet/fleece combination is the warmer scarf while the 100% velvet scarf is lighter and dressier.

Hats:
Our hats are primarily constructed from polar fleece and topped with a circle of embossed velvet.

Mittens:
Our mittens are designed with an embossed velvet front, fleece back, and lined inside with super warm MicroTek©

Earmuffs:
Our earmuffs have been designed with an exterior of hand-embossed velvet and an interior of warm polar fleece. Unlike many other earmuffs our version maintains a low profile and sits close around the ears.

Bags:
This compact and stylish accessory has a black rayon twist strap and is lined with rayon.

Holiday Stockings:
These sturdy and roomy stockings can be filled with Holiday cheer for years. Each stocking contains a black rayon lining and has a black ribbon attached.

Pillows:
Underground Velvet is happy to re-introduce pillows to its line of products. Available in 2 sizes, 16" and 12" squares, and 12 colors, these embossed velvet pillows add a splash of color and texture to your home. Both front and back feature our unique prints. The insert is 100% down-like polyester.

Patterns

Underground Velvet has over the years designed a wide range of different patterns for embossing. From time to time we revive some of our vintage patterns for special web offerings. In 2004 we added a Star pattern to our popular Spirals and Snowflakes patterns. The Star embossing is only available by special order through the web site. In 2005 we added the Leaf pattern to the catalog for embossings on scarves, hats. and mittens. As the image here shows, the embossing creates deep textures across the velvet revealing a complimentary palette of iridescence below the fabric surface. The fabric for each product is carefully embossed by hand and because of this process ensures that no two pieces are ever the same. Pillows are also available in the "Leaves" and "Harlequin". For 2006-2007 we have created the bold new "Urchin" pattern.

Colors

We do our best to provide accurate depictions of the colors of the iridescent velvets used in our products. Though satisfactory, the web images can only hint at the lively and colorful undertones revealed by our unique hand-embossed process. Each of the colors comes to life in different lights, both indoors and outdoors. Our color palette is refreshed each year with the introduction of several new colors. This year we are offering 12 ruch colors.

Process

The Underground Velvet design and production process has been refined over the years and advanced from using old stovetop electric plates to originating numerous images from which to create their unique pattern templates. The images are rendered using desktop publishing software, and templates are then cut from stainless steel or photo-etched in copper. Heated presses are used to hand-emboss the stylish patterns onto iridescent velvets ensuring that no two products are ever exactly alike. The embossed velvets are then paired with various colored crushed velvets and polar-fleece to produce a beautiful assortment of fashionable winterwear and accessories.

Care

All Underground Velvet© products are dry-cleanable and treated with silicone for water repellency. However we do not advise wearing our products in heavy rain.

To keep our products looking their best we recommend laying them flat with nothing on top. Scarves should be stored on hangers. Should you wish to steam out wrinkles, do not touch the steamer to the velvets.
